Jyrah Miller: Del Giornos Restaurant, Port Lincoln

I am 19 years of age and I live and work in Port Lincoln, South Australia. I am currently employed as an Apprentice Chef with Del Giornos Restaurant, Tasman Tce in Port Lincoln. I am in my 3rd year with another 12 months left before I am a qualified Chef. I am currently completing my Certificate 3 in Commercial Cookery.

I totally enjoy working at Del Giornos and the owner/ manager, Mr Kris Bunder is very supportive to my role. I have also received tremendous support from the Aboriginal Apprenticeship Program via the State Government in assisting me with my tools of trade which included a knife set, appropriate chef clothing, transport and finally on going mentoring support. Without this assistance I would not have been able to afford these items and probably felt left behind.

My ambitions are to finish my final year as an Apprentice Chef and once qualified to seek employment at an inland restaurant/resort such as Yulara where I can best learn more about my culture’s cooking techniques.
